Hang On, Or Let Go? When Yoga Fails.

In yoga, we talk all the time about “letting go”. Let go of what no longer serves you, let go of what is weighing you down, let go of attachment, let go of ego, let go of thoughts, let go of everything and surrender to what IS. But what happens when your world is so fundamentally turned upside down and inside out that you’re freefalling, and things are so BAD that you desperately need to...

Who Never Needs a Vacation?

Having just gotten off the plane from a two month jaunt to India, I’m finding that this statement is resonating (quite loudly) against the bubbled walls it feels like I’m floating in as I am slowly being re-integrated into my “real” life. For now, I feel like a detached observer, with a brand new pair of eyes. People seem so wrapped up in their current Christmas frenzy, work frenzy, and well…real life. For someone who...

Open Up

I’ve eaten, I’ve prayed (involuntarily, to the cucumber gods), I’ve chanted (yup, it happened), I’ve yoga’d, and I’ve fallen in love with India. Or at least, with the relatively small part of it I’ve lived in for the past (almost) two months. I can’t honestly say that I’m ready to go back to real life, real cold and real work, but I CAN say that I’m really looking forward to seeing my loved ones. In...

Aftermath

Here we are, one week post-yoga teacher training. No one ever tells you how your body and mind will react after an experience like this, which I suppose is as fundamentally different for each individual as each individual IS, by definition. We all go into it with our own stuff, and come out (hopefully) on the other side with a whole big stack of shiny new insights, reflections, life lessons, and so on. I guess...

Crime and Banishment

A week before my yoga teacher training finished, I had to take down all my blog posts about it and abstain from publishing more until I graduated. Why would I do such a thing, you may ask? Because I was in the middle of writing a brutally honest rant in which I was venting my mounting frustration towards our “master” (I use this term loosely) teacher, and about him being a yoga dictator on a...

Escape From Yogatraz

If you would have told me a year ago that what just happened would happen, I probably would have told you to go namaste yourself. But, alas, it DID happen. I have just become a yoga teacher, diploma and all. After completing a quasi-sadistic Ashtanga teacher training course in India, (a country which had been quite low on my travel bucket list, but which I have now fallen in love with), I am now basking...

Learning Curve

Sometimes, things have to come undone in order to be rebuilt better. And sometimes, things outside of our control happen that put the brakes on our best laid plans. Earlier this week, one of our classmates mysteriously disappeared from yoga camp. She was in the morning asana session, but at the end of the following class, it was announced that she had left us. This came as a shock, since it was very sudden, her...

Bindi, Bandha, Bad Student

Well, I’ve done it. I chanted in front of our entire class (under duress, SOBER!!!), pissed off my teachers, almost pissed myself laughing, and had my yoga-mates in stitches. This was in no way intentional, but man did it ever hit the spot. Bull’s eye. For the past two weeks, in groups of three, we’ve had to start off the yoga day (before sunset, in front of 30 + classmates and our teachers) leading hour-long...
